As a special feature of The Fanbase Weekly podcast, the Fanbase Feature focuses on and celebrates a specific element of geek culture.

On Saturday afternoon, September 17, dozens of Long Beach Comic Con attendees assembled in the Creator’s Lab room for the #MakeComics series feature, “The Art of Lettering.” Serving as moderator, Fanbase Press Editiorials Manager Michele Brittany introduced Richard Starkings, letterer and founder of font design firm Comicraft. Starkings has lettered for publishers starting with 2000 AD, Marvel, DC Comics, Dark Horse, Image, and several others throughout his career. In this Fanbase Feature, we provide you with the panel audio.

Starkings began the panel by sharing how Dennis Collins’ The Perishers, a British comic strip, helped educate and inspire him towards a career in comics. He was entertaining as he described how lettering was an integral component to the storytelling narrative.
