The Arkham Sessions, hosted by Dr. Andrea Letamendi and Brian Ward, is a weekly podcast dedicated to the psychological analysis of Batman: The Animated Series. Nostalgic, humorous, and even a little educational, each episode promises to lend some insight into the heroes, villains, and classic stories of the Dark Knight!
The Arkham Sessions, Ep. 56: “The Mechanic”
The brutal bird is back! This week, we revisit the psychology of The Penguin in our review of “The Mechanic,” another exciting episode from the original Batman: The Animated Series. Due to a high-octane car chase, the Batmobile is pretty banged up. Batman takes his beloved wheels to his mechanic, a man who basically services all the bat-vehicles in a secret garage hidden under Gotham City. We also learn that he is also the original engineer that designed this incarnation of the Batmobile. Unfortunately, The Penguin discovers the location of the secret garage and blackmails the mechanic into booby-trapping the Batmobile — so that he could control the vehicle remotely in order to kill Batman and Robin!
Although the episode is full of action-packed chases and hostage situations, there’s still a lot of psychology to discuss! Is The Penguin a sociopath? And, what’s a sociopath anyway? What does all of this destruction say about Batman?
