Hollyweird Science: Science Fiction as Inspiration
Thursday, July 21, 2016

7:00 -8:00pm – Room 5AB

While the scientific accuracy depicted in television and film has increasingly come under the microscope in the past decade, science fiction and science-themed productions serve the scientific community in ways other than as entertaining lessons. Many scientists point to series like Star Trek and films like 2001 as their inspiration for choosing their careers. Even the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy is looking to Hollywood to inspire America to go to Mars. The panelists share their favorite sci-fi films and TV series (including guilty pleasures), as well as what those productions have meant to them in their careers. Featuring Zack Stentz (The Flash, Lore), Amy Berg (Counterpart, Eureka), Kevin Grazier, Ph.D. (Gravity, Battlestar Galactica), Phil Plait, Ph.D. (Bad Universe, 51 Degrees North), Jessica Cail, Ph.D. (Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Zootopia), Andrea Letamendi, Ph.D. (Under the Mask, The Arkham Sessions), and Helen Stringer, (The Gloaming, Paradigm). Rise of the Fangirls: Women in Recent Geek Culture
Saturday, July 23, 2016

11:00 -12:00pm – Room 25ABC

In 2010, nine women gathered onstage in front of a packed and engaged crowd at Comic-Con International to dispel the myth that “Geek Girls, like unicorns, don’t exist.” The subsequent six years have seen an explosion in female representation in geek spaces. Surveys tracking attendance numbers at fan-based events, as well as data regarding women gamers and comic book readers, are suggestive of gender parity within geek culture. Headlines coming out of Comic-Con itself proclaim that “women totally dominate” the event and that we are experiencing the rise of fangirls. But how far have women in geek culture really come since that landmark “Geek Girls Exist” panel? Andrea Letamendi (Pop Culture Hero Coalition), Jamie Broadax (Black Girl Nerds), Kristin Rielly (Geek Girls Network), Suzanne Scott (UT-Austin), Sam Maggs (Bioware, Fangirl’s Guide to the Galaxy), Marie Poole (Lone Shark Games), and moderator Jennifer K. Stuller (GeekGirlCon, Ink-Stained Amazon) talk about what interventions are being made in the culture, what areas still need work, and what the fangirl future holds.

I’m in the Nerd Business
Saturday, July 23, 2016
5:00pm – 6:00pm
– Pacific 24, North Tower, Marriott Marquis & Marina

How do you create and sustain a business that caters to the geek lifestyle without exploiting the very people to whom you provide services? Entrepreneurs whose businesses cater to a predominantly nerdy or geeky clientele will discuss how these businesses started, how they sustain their service to their clients and compete with big conglomerates looking to capitalize on the geek marketplace, and how they sell goods and market services to a community seeking authenticity, without falling into the trap of pandering or gimmicks. Panelists include Matthew Arevalo (Loot Crate), Janelle Badali (Badali Jewelry), and David Nett (Nerdstrong Gym). Moderated by Brian Ward (The Arkham Sessions, Shout! Factory).

The Psychology of the Marvel TV Universe
Saturday, July 23, 2016
7:00pm – 8:00pm
– Room 5AB

They’re from different eras. They operate in different parts of the world, not to mention, occasionally, different dimensions! And they fight different villains, sometimes reluctantly. Yet, they’re all very much connected through the same universe and many of the same experiences, including trauma, adversity, and self-discovery. Writers Craig Titley (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Lindsey Allen (Agent Carter), Christos Gage (Marvel’s Daredevil), and Scott Reynolds (Jessica Jones) join Dr. Andrea Letamendi (The Arkham Sessions) to explore the dramatic psychology of the Marvel TV Universe. Moderated by Brian Ward (The Arkham Sessions).

On behalf of everyone at Fanbase Press, we look forward to seeing you in San Diego!
