At the end of Wonder Woman #1, we are reintroduced to Cheetah, one of Wonder Woman’s archenemies, which is arguable simply because people like to argue.
This Cheetah is the Barbra Minerva iteration that George Perez created during his legendary WW reboot. Current WW artist Liam Sharp shows us a Cheetah like we’ve never seen before. She is very feral and almost frightening looking, the farthest from human I believe we have ever seen her. I can’t wait to see if there is a human version.
Wonder Woman tracked her down to ask for her help, just like she did in the Sensation Comics story written by Trina Robbins.
Now, I’m not criticizing the use of the same plot device, I’m just “wonder”ing why she turns to her arch-nemesis so often in times of need?
Could there be a little girl crush going on here? I mean, on the last page of the book, she looked as if she was about to mount Diana, and Diana didn’t look like she was too upset. I mean she was actually attacking Wonder Woman, but for argument’s sake.
For that matter, do heroes and villains secretly swoon for their counterparts?
Look at Batman and The Joker. Through the years (intentional or not), there has been a fair amount of homo-erotic subtext. I mean they’ve been together for a long time now. I guess the more obvious romantic relationship Batman has with one of his rougue’s gallery would be Catwoman.
Now, I can’t really see Superman having a torrid affair with Lex Luthor or Brainiac. Spider-Man hits on his enemies all the time, but that’s just his personality.
Maybe it’s more like obsession? But who is obsessed with whom? It seems like two sides of the same coin. One cannot exist without the other. I guess that’s the whole point… I guess.
I don’t really know if heroes are secretly coveting their foes, but they do say there’s a thin line between love and hate.
See you next week for Wonder Woman Wednesday, and be sure to check out I Am Wonder Fan.
