Last Wednesday saw the the release of Wonder Woman: Rebirth. The story, while well written by Greg Rucka and beautifully illustrated by Matthew Clark and Liam Sharp, served merely as a prelude to next week’s Wonder Woman #1.

Note: This article contains spoilers for Wonder Woman Rebirth # 1.

The story has Diana questioning her memory and origin, not knowing if she is born of flesh or clay. (I’m team clay by the way.)

She crushes Ares’, God of War’s, helmet with ease, something she shouldn’t be able to do. And with that, Greg Rucka gives the middle finger to the New 52 version of Wonder Woman. (I hope.) I never liked the notion of Diana being the War God – that would be like making The Pope the grand wizard of the KKK. How could the embodiment of peace and truth be the goddess of War?

“The first casualty of war is the truth.” Preach, Greg Rucka.

While there is not much to this story aside from setting up the new Wonder Woman series, it still is head and shoulders above anything that we have seen in the monthly WW series for the past 2 years. Diana questions her past and journeys to Olympus to seek the truth of her origin. I’m sure next week’s Wonder Woman #1 will delve further into the story set up in Rebirth.

I, for one, cannot wait to see the exciting, new direction Wonder Woman takes. Hopefully, we’ll get a more solid Diana. She’s never as good as she should be when people mess with her roots too much. I don’t see anyone saying, “Superman is actually a Martian.” (Hey, that would be a kind of cool story.)

I guess that’s all for this week’s Wonder Woman Wednesday. See you back here next week. And, as always, be sure to check out the “I Am Wonder Fan” Facebook page.
