Today marks the release of DC Comics’ Wonder Woman Rebirth # 1, a day Wonder Woman fans have been waiting for for a long time.
With a scene-stealing turn in Batman V Superman and the forthcoming, first-ever solo Wonder Woman film, Wonder Woman is enjoying a resurgence of popularity in her 75th anniversary. I wonder if William Moulton Marston realized his creation would have such a lasting legacy.
For the past 2 years, fans have been critical of the direction the Wonder Woman monthly comic book had taken, spiraling from the subsequent launch of “The New 52.” Rebirth promises to “fix” some of the missteps and get fans excited about DC Comics again.
With former Wonder Woman writer Greg Rucka and rotating artists Liam Sharp and Nicola Scott at the helm, it appears as if our beloved Amazon is in good hands.
One of the controversial aspects of The New 52 was changing Wonder Woman’s origin. I, personally, was not thrilled with making Wonder Woman the love child of Amazon Queen Hippolyta and Zeus. Rebirth has Diana questioning her true origin and going on a quest to find that truth.
Why mess with her origin at all? I think Hippolyta fashioning her daughter from clay and praying to the gods to give her life is truly unique. No matter how many times the DCU has been rebooted, rehashed, or rebirthed, Batman and Superman have never had their origins changed. Superman was always the last son of Krypton, and Batman was the result of Bruce Wayne’s parents being gunned down right in front of him as a child. Are there different rules for girls? What gives?
I am very excited to see what Rucka has in store for Wonder Woman. I’m not overly excited that her new costume is geared to reflect her costume in the film, but it still looks pretty good. (At least they’re not skorts!)
One of the aspects that has been revealed (possible spoiler) is that Wonder Woman has a twin brother named Jason who was the first man to set foot on Paradise Island. I can’t say I’m over the moon about Wonder Woman having a twin brother. I’m not sure why. Perhaps it diminishes her uniqueness once again? But I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. Who knows? He may wind up being one of my favorite characters. At any rate, it feels like a good time to be a Wonder Fan!
