GLAAD Media Award-winning and Eisner and Harvey Awards-nominated publisher and media outlet Fanbase Press is proud to announce that it will be the second publisher to adopt New York Times best-selling creator Matt Kindt’s “100% Human-Made” initiative on all of its forthcoming titles, following in the footsteps of publisher AHOY Comics. The new, open-source certification for comics, graphic novels, and other visual, musical, and audio forms of creative work is designed to designate them as fully derived of the human imagination and otherwise free of elements designed or enhanced by generative artificial intelligence. The first Fanbase Press title to carry the certification will be Shrub, the middle grade Graphic Medicine series by Shane Portman (Tumble Leaf) and Andy Alves (Cosmic Cadets) which explores the various ways that we allow grief to take root – soon to be crowdfunded on Kickstarter.
“Fanbase Press does not support the use of AI in its media nor its publishing. We hope that the implementation of Matt Kindt’s ‘100% Human-Made’ certification will shine a light on the hard work, dedication, and passion of the comics industry professionals who give voice to the stories and characters that we cherish,” said Barbra Dillon, Fanbase Press Editor-in-Chief.
Featuring an emblem designed by Kindt himself that will first debut on June’s MIND MGMT: NEW & IMPROVED #1 – launching a brand-new beginning for the creator’s widely acclaimed comics masterpiece at Oni Press – the “100% Human-Made” certification is created under the Creative Commons “Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International” license. Under those terms, artists seeking to utilize the “100% Human-Made” certification can “distribute, remix, adapt, and build upon the material in any medium or format” for commercial and not-for-profit purposes, as long as it carries the following Creative Commons attribution:

Creators and publishers interested in learning more about the “100% Human-Made” initiative are encouraged to visit the Oni Press website.
In Shrub, readers will join Shrub who is, well… a shrub… for a cross-country road trip to Hollywood! Join Shrub and a grieving brother and sister as they hit the open road in search of connection. On their journey, pit stops, wacky plant enthusiasts, uprooting, and re-routing abound. Shrub explores the various ways that we allow grief to take root, inspired by writer Shane Portman’s experience with the loss of his father. The series features “Letting Grief Take Root” essays written by individuals with a personal and/or professional connection to grief who relate Shrub’s story to their own lived experience. Essayists include Shane Portman and his family, as well as grief doula Kat Primeau and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Ariel Landrum (Geek Therapy).
