It Came! from Titan Books is a fast-paced, funny-as-hell, B-movie parody, and it’s one of my favorite books of the year. 

“Directed” by Dan Boultwood, Esq., this comic is presented as a movie from the ’50s or ’60s, complete with cigarette and stocking advertisements, as well as a “movie trailer” which precedes the feature presentation. Boultwood, who wrote and drew this gem, takes us through a typical 1950s alien invasion story with anything-but-typical wit and charm. You get highbrow satire and lowbrow humor following the naive and chaste Doctor Boy Brett and his clever companion Doris Night as they struggle to defeat the giant steel menace, spoiling tea time and generally wreaking havoc in England’s quiet countryside. 

The thing that struck me most about this comic, beyond the hilarious writing and the expert art, is the lightning pace at which the comic moves.  Boultwood clearly understands comics and lets his flawless fundamentals do the heavy lifting, maintaining clarity and building character, leaving him free to push the story forward with an impressive speed and agility.  All this to say that It Came! is deliriously light and fun! 

Gleefully poking fun at the days of old, bold, enthusiastic, and imaginative film production, and, indeed, British culture itself, Dan Boultwood has created a witty and magnificent comic that everyone should purchase immediately.
