The following is an interview with Greg & Fake regarding the upcoming release of their comic book, Santos Sisters #2, through Floating World Comics. In this interview, Fanbase Press Editor-in-Chief Barbra Dillon chats with Greg & Fake about their shared creative process in bringing the story to life, what they hope that readers may take away from the story, and more!
Barbra Dillon, Fanbase Press Editor-in-Chief: Congratulations on the upcoming release of Santos Sisters #2! For those who may be unfamiliar, how would you describe the series’ premise, and what (or who) was its inspiration?
Greg & Fake: Thank you. The Santos Sisters, Ambar and Alana, are two sisters who discovered a pair of magical amulets, bestowed with powers by the mysterious Madame Sosostris. They use these powers to protect the town of Las Brisas from a coterie of villains. The stories in the comic are usually short 3-8 pages, in the style of a classic Archie comic, but with a more current adult style of humor.
BD: What can you tell us about your shared creative process of bringing each issue to life?
G&F: The Santos Sisters comic is created by Greg and Fake. We handle the scripts, line art, coloring, lettering and layout. We work with a team of gag writers (Marc Koprinarov, Dave Landsberger and Graham Smith) who help bring the stories to life and build out the world. The process is similar to what we would imagine a sitcom’s writing room to be. Lots of back and forth, lots of cigarettes and lots of tears. Marc also handles a lot of the behind-the-scenes stuff, like coordinating with the publisher and working with the printer and distributors and shipping companies. Our comic also uses an advertising model as opposed to crowdfunding. So, selling ads and working with our advertisers, as well.
BD: At Fanbase Press, our #StoriesMatter initiative endeavors to highlight the impact that stories can have on audiences of various mediums. How do you feel that Santos Sisters will connect with and impact readers?
G&F: We have had fantastic responses so far from the readers. The first issue has gone to press twice. The goal going forward is to really build out and expand the world and characters while keeping true to what we started.
BD: Do you foresee expanding the story into subsequent story arcs (or into other entertainment mediums) if given the opportunity?
G&F: The Santos Sisters will be coming out quarterly in 2023. There is a slowly-unfolding overarching story, but, for the most part, the stories will be self-contained, without much need of reading previous issues. We also have plans of expanding south of the border, with a version in Spanish.
BD: Are there any upcoming projects on which you are currently working that you would like to share with our readers?
G&F: We are currently focused solely on the Santos Sisters. Issue two comes out in September, and issue three soon to follow. We will be hosting a release party and signing event at Howling Pages, a brand new store on the north side of Chicago on Friday, September 16.
BD: Lastly, what is the best way for our readers to find more information about Santos Sisters and your other work?
G&F: You can find out more by going to www.santossisters.com.
