After a fairly tense last issue, we had Mal coming to terms with his grief and PTSD with Inara by his side, while the rest of the Serenity crew along with the Earthers and Workers had kind of come to a new arrangement.

While the crew have a plan to get off the planet and back to their side of the ‘Verse, it all hinges on finding just the right piece of equipment for them to be able to do so. After several tense issues, this one kind of feels like a gentle breath of relief, the calm before a storm. Since they’re unable to leave just yet, the Serenity crew and the Workers live alongside the Earthers, building a new life together and it all seems dandy. But good things don’t last forever, and change is always inevitable.

In his second-to-last issue on the series, Greg Pak gives us a look at what our Big Damn Heroes’ lives could be like if they weren’t constantly on the run. If they could put down roots, live boring, normal lives, content and happy. In a way, it seems like Pak setting up the next stage of the Firefly series. With the current series coming to a close in the next issue, I expect to see some surprising decisions being made by the crew, and a sense of closure for a few of them.

The combination of Simona di Gianfelice’s art and Francesco Segala’s colorwork is aesthetically pleasing, as always, with Segala’s colors really playing off the linework and giving us a beautiful issue that’s sentimental without being schmaltzy. Jim Campbell’s lettering is incredibly effective in an issue with a LOT of characters talking to each other. It all just reads so naturally that you can totally take in the story and enjoy it.

Overall, the current creative team’s second-to-last issue reads like a little slice of heaven, but we all know that things can’t stay that way too long. Very interested in seeing what the new status quo will be when the dust settles.
