Yin and yang. Strong vs. weak. Guts vs. cowardice. In Dark Horse Comics’ new series, Lucky Devil, an immortal being possesses someone who is their complete opposite, and then loses their power to them. The results are unexpected.
Lucky Devil tells the story of Stanley, a pathetic figure who is taken advantage of by everything around him. Love interests, coworkers, and even traffic dominate his very being. When he is possessed by a demon that goes by the name of Zed, Stanley is left with shame and remorse; however, this self-loathing is not the only thing Zed bestows upon Stanley.
Written by Cullen Bunn and illustrated by Fran Galán, both the writing and the artwork are great. Cullen Bunn coveys raw emotions which are as believable as anything written in comics. The horrifying experiences of Stanley – both before and after Zed’s possession – can be felt through the pages. This is due, in no small part, to the fantastic artwork by Fran Galán which is both cartoony and frightening realistic at the same time. This is an excellent book that explores many themes, not the least of which is opposite personalities and their effects on each other.
