‘Little Bird #3:’ Advance Comic Book Review

Ya know those heroic stories in which the heroes of the story have a one-in-a-million shot at victory, and somehow they manage to succeed . . . every time . . . multiple times in a story? “Never tell me the odds!” Little Bird is not that story. The heroes in Darcy Van Poelgeest and Ian Bertram’s comic books eries are full of vigor and determination, but they are also imperfect and quite possibly overpowered by the oppressive Church State of the Catholic Church.

This government controlled by the Catholic Church is technologically advanced and combines some level of magic. This is a world that morphs human anatomy with strange technologies. It’s not quite even cyberpunk, more like David Cronenberg’s Existenz meshed with the existential, weird beauty of a Alejandro Jodorowsky world.

Our heroes, our scrappy rebels – led by a biologically enhanced warrior the size of an oak tree named Axe – wish to bring an end to this wretched theocracy. Little Bird, the daughter of a great warrior who also seems to have some supernatural ability passed along by her mother, rescued and convinced Axe to join the fight. The results of their first attempt at bringing an end to the Church’s madness is never not surprising and never not emotionally potent. The reader’s expectations are played with like a cat playing with a mouse that it’s going to swallow whole headfirst. That might be a weird analogy, but I’ve seen it happen, and it makes the most sense to me right now.

Poelgeest and Bertram have created a beautiful world for the reader, but despite its beauty, its not safe. It’s harrowing: a violent world, a surreal world. It’s a world of epic characters with amazing designs, some of which only play a small part but will ingrain themselves into your memory. This is a world in which the villains are more than formidable. I can genuinely say that I have no idea where this journey is going to go next, except that it might start to get pretty esoteric.
