‘Black Hammer ’45: From the World of Black Hammer #2’ – Advance Comic Book Review

It’s World War II in the world of Black Hammer, and Jeff Lemire has given his creation over to some of the best creators in the industry to convey a story that takes some inspiration from the Tuskegee Airmen.

The first issue introduced us to the pilots as elderly war vets and flashed back to their final mission. In the present, they are on their way to a memorial event; in the past, they are flying into enemy territory to release some prisons and are going up against every kind of bonkers thing that can be thrown at them. In the last issue, we left our pilots as they were basically flying towards a border guard…the size of a Titan! It was pretty epic and shocking in the best way, because the rest of the first issue hadn’t really incorporated the superheroes into the war.

Now, they dive in head first, and this book is rip-roaring fun, showing us normal men in a world with superheroes fighting for their country.

Ray Fawkes’ script is great. The team of Matt Kindt and Sharlene Kindt, artist and colorist, can’t be beat. Their art on this feels a little like Golden Age art – perfect for the type of comics that were around then. You can feel the velocity in every panel. The dog fights are genuinely exciting and incredibly creative!

In these Black Hammer side stories, you know connections are going to be made to the main story. The story here was good enough that I wasn’t even looking for it, but when it does happen, it’s awesome. Plus, the character who hasn’t seen a lot of action outside of the main storyline may finally get their time in the spotlight.
