‘The Girl in the Bay #3:’ Advance Comic Book Review

Kathy Sartori has been through a lot: murdered in the 1960s, coming back 50 years later, discovering that there’s a version of her out there who wasn’t murdered and who lived a full life in her absence—and then seeing that version of herself get murdered, as well. It’s a strange situation to be sure.

As we begin this issue, both Kathy and her killer are looking for answers and trying to figure out just what happened, both 50 years ago and since. Kathy does it with the help of her dead rock star lover, and the killer does it with the help of the hideous demon who haunts him and compels him to kill. Neither one seems to be able to get a handle on what, exactly, is going on or why.

Frustrated and confused, Kathy seeks out her older self’s widower. In the previous issue, she absorbed 50 years’ worth of memories and emotions from the other Kathy at her funeral, so she shares a connection, even a love, with the husband and their family. But, can the family ever understand that connection? Would they accept Kathy for who and what she is—whatever she is? And, who is the beautiful, other-worldly woman who seems to be guiding Kathy on her journey?

There’s one issue left after this one to wrap up the story arc, and there are a lot of questions still left unanswered. I don’t think that final issue is going to spend its time providing concrete explanations for everything, though. It’s not that kind of story, and that’s one of the things I like about it. It’s a strange and ethereal experience that’s more about the connections people make and the things that bind them, rather than the practical mechanics of Buddhist theology. It’s also a captivating story, and I can’t wait to see what happens next.
