I’m officially addicted to video games! Recently, I’ve been playing Herizon Zero Dawn on my PS4, and, of course, I’m still playing the 2017 Game of the Year, Nintendo’s Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. What I like about these games is their enriching approach to open-world environments. Of course, that makes me wonder what other games/franchises could do well with open-world gaming . . . Star Wars Battlefront? Uncharted? Or better yet—Tomb Raider?
At least the world of comics is bringing us a Tomb Raider series worthy of its own video game. Dark Horse Comics’ Tomb Raider: Survivor’s Crusade is a wonderful, new storyline about Saint Christopher’s Cross of Stars, Trinity’s evil plans to go to any length in finding this legendary artifact, and the heroine of all heroine’s, Ms. Lara Croft.
While some believe Christopher’s Cross reveals the exact location of God, Lara is more interested in trying to stop Trinity after her journey to Thailand has also led her to find “The Cardinal,” the man apparently responsible for killing her father. Each issue appears to be told through letters written by Lara to her best friend and literal partner in crime, Jonah.
This month, in Tomb Raider: Survivor’s Crusade #3, Lara tries her damnedest to live a “normal life.” All four seasons go by while trying to recall lessons her father taught her, or clues he may have left her as a child which, of course, lead Ms. Croft to her latest tomb to raid, the secret Monastery of Akhenaten.
Once again, script writers Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly have delivered another beautiful story that interweaves both Lara’s past and present together. Along with line art and colors by Ashley A. Woods and Michael Atiyeh, respectively, Dark Horse truly has an incredible comic book series on their shelves.
A comic book that could one day make for a great open-world-style video game…
Until next month,
