During the era of prohibition, speakeasies are now operated on airships and dirigibles. When one of the most notorious of these ships is raided, the cops think they have the whole thing in the bag; however, not everything is as it seems, and the ship’s captain, the notorious Anne Blanchard, has a few plans of her own.
I’d love to say more about the plot, but it’s really better if you read it for yourself. There’s already a lot going on here, including a number of twists and turns, which I’d rather not spoil for you. Things move pretty fast, so it may take a moment to catch up in some places, but it’s worth the effort every step of the way.
This is a great beginning to what looks like it will turn into a beautifully complex story—as well as a really fun and entertaining adventure. The writing sets the stage for a lot more fun to come, but what really stands out is the artwork. Great art is vital in a Steampunk comic to create the world that’s being presented to the audience. Rum Row succeeds phenomenally on that front, with great detail and vivid color that gives the whole comic a more immersive feel.
The story is supplemented by a few pages of posters and pinups that add to the atmosphere and help to develop the world even further. There’s also a short, but fun, black-and-white adventure involving pirates.
All in all, I’m sold on this comic. I can’t wait for the next issue. Particularly if you like Steampunk, but also if you just like great adventure stories set in vividly illustrated worlds, you should do yourself a favor and check out Rum Row.
