‘Black Hammer #10:’ Advance Comic Book Review

Black Hammer has veered into Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining territory. If you’ve ever wondered what it would feel like watching superheroes suffer from extreme bouts of cabin fever, start reading from the top, because the psychological warfare is beginning to amp up.

The premise: Golden Age heroes of Spiral City were mysteriously transported to a farm near a small town. They can’t escape. They are stuck there. While some see it as a prison, others see it as the perfect retirement home. Some are trapped, not only by their physical space, but by the powers they had, while others are beginning to build a new life. The one thing they are all trapped by: their memories. The daughter of the superhero, the Black Hammer, has recently arrived and is trapped like the rest, and the fresh perspective on the situation is igniting all of those things bubbling beneath the surface to boil over.

The time Jeff Lemire, Dean Ormston, and Dave Stewart have put into this book is not only starting to pay off, but it’s starting to make me think there won’t be a possibility at a happy ending. I’m beginning to think that not everyone will make it out of their current situation. The great thing about this book and how the characters have been presented is that I really want them to survive. The creative team has detailed every character to the degree that equals the best that comic books have to offer.

I don’t know what else to say about this book other than you should be reading it. You should find the first issue or the first collection. Go to ComiXology, buy it, and dive in. Jeff Lemire is in the midst of his own Golden Age, and you don’t want to miss it.
