‘Dishonored #3:’ Comic Book Review

Titan Comics has immediately thrust fans into a chaotic cover scene with their release of the third issue of Dishonored: The Wyrmwood Deceit. The main character, Corvo Attano, finds himself surrounded by three enemies armed with technological weapons standing tall atop menacing-looking mechanical legs. Corvo stares through his mask, ready to either strike or defend. He grips a short sword in one hand, while the other emanates a yellow and bluish-green glow. Will his powers save him or does the cover already indicate his fate?

Cover artist Chris Wahl uses amazing blue tones to enhance the exceptionally detailed scene, which further illustrates how one page can pull a reader into the opening pages. The story might seem over before even turning to the inside pages, but writer Gordon Rennie quickly alleviates any stress by providing a rundown of events leading up through that seemingly inescapable moment.

The story begins with Corvo’s apprentice, Martha Cottings, trying to make sense of the mystical world she’s found herself in. While searching for clues, she identifies a symbol seemingly known to witchcraft. Despite knowing she must find Corvo, she uses her wits, and bribery, to obtain information about this “witch’s mark.” Severely injured and somewhere else in the city of Dunwall, the man behind the mask finds help to escape those chasing him. He’s able to find refuge and stay hidden, while also trying to determine if he can find his lost sister.

The intriguing story has intelligent characters who can recognize and navigate around dangerous situations. The characters provide something to cheer for when they elude a would-be trap, and also gain the upper hand. This is an important aspect to the story, since there seem to be many villains running around in plain sight. I mean, seriously, did you really think the top hats wouldn’t give you away?

This mini-series is a comic book adaptation of the popular video game, Dishonored, developed by Arkane Studios and Bethesda Softworks. And much like the game, bright, bold colors burst from the pages of this comic book, providing a somewhat unique experience with amplified visual effects one might find while playing. The series is scheduled to complete its four-story arc prior to the November release of the game’s sequel, Dishonored 2. The content, much like the official trailer announced at E3 in June, is meant for a mature audience.

Dishonored: The Wyrmwood Deceit #3 is currently available in print and digital form.
