‘Magic #1:’ Advance Comic Book Review

Magic: The Gathering has been around as a card game since 1993. Since then, it has been adapted into video games, novels, and comics. The first comic series was developed almost 30 years ago, and the property has changed ownership numerous times. The latest incarnation is published by BOOM! Studios, written by Jed Mackay and illustrated by IG Guara.

Magic #1 introduces the kingdom city of Ravinca. This paradise is attacked with a coordinated assassination attempt on Guildmasters Ral Zarek, Vraska, and Kaya. Throughout the battle, the reader learns more about these characters and their world. The disruption culminates with the introduction of the heroic Jace Beleren.

For anyone unfamiliar with the franchise, this first issue of Magic tells you all you need to know. As a universe builder for the uninformed, it’s probably one of the best-written introductions of fantasy science fiction; the characters and their world could not be clearer. For anyone familiar with the franchise, this issue gives you plenty of action and adventure with characters you know and love.

Magic #1 is the best kind of science fiction / fantasy. It builds a universe, introduces characters and situations, and leaves the readers wanting more. The story is clear and easy for anyone familiar or unfamiliar with the franchise to navigate. The action is phenomenal, and the heroes intriguing.  It is absolutely worth reading for anyone who loves the magical.
