‘Something Is Killing the Children #14:’ Advance Comic Book Review

Why? That is the question that has been coming up for me in the last handful of issues of this series. As readers, we now know how the monsters that kill children and terrorize small towns appear, but why? I feel that there may be a deeper psychological answer that Tynion and Dell’edera will leave up to us to figure out. On the other hand, if they end up giving us a clear-cut answer, I won’t complain.

The biggest clue as to the monsters’ motivations is pretty clear: We’re dealing with the death of students – children – by forces that seem almost as unstoppable as they are mysterious. The deaths are violent and cruel and occur without hesitation. There is also an order (the order of St. George) that – rather than helping these people – would rather cover up the events. The allegory that connects this story to real-world mass shootings and the anger and frustration felt by Erica Slaughter (our hero monster killer) is made apparent by Tynion and Dell’edera. Why won’t the characters do anything to stop it. Why?

All of the reasons are there, even though people try to hide them: politics, money, ignorance. But still – why? All of those same things that were affecting how we protect our children have spilled over into Something Is Killing the Children.

There is a power in this story that allows the events unfolding to be felt all the more deeply, whether we’re immediately aware of the allegorical nature or not.

This is truly one of the best series on the shelf right now, allowing readers to understand the unique power that horror stories can hold and accomplish. It’s nice to see that everyone involved understands why horror stories matter.

And it’s just a hell of a fun ride that allows Erica Slaughter to absolutely kick ass.
