‘Star Wars Adventures #2 (2020):’ Comic Book Review

When Star Wars first debuted in 1977, it was accompanied by a Marvel comic series that told the tale of Luke Skywalker and friends between the films. Those stories allowed the readers to spend time with and get to know the characters beyond the movies. We haven’t had that experience since 1985 when that first series ended. Sure, there have been specials and spin-offs, untold tales, histories, and revamps, but nothing more substantial then that… until now.

Star Wars Adventures, published by IDW, tells the further adventures of the sequel characters between the films. The second issue has two stories, one focusing on the heroes and one on the villains. They take place between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker and shed much-needed light on these characters.

The first story, titled “The Obstacle Course,” is written by Michael Moreci with art by Ilias Kyriazis. It is the concluding part of a two-issue tale that finds our heroes on an alien planet. Finn and Poe have been captured by a man named Lannix who intends to turn them over to the First Order. Meanwhile, Rey and BB-8 have their own adventure, complete with lots of lightsaber action. Moreci is a writer who is always a joy to read. There is not a recap of issue one, so some small details slip through the cracks (like which planet they were on and why they were there), but that did not take away any enjoyment. The story is clean and easy to follow. The art, while not photo realistic like some of the more recent Marvel series, is straightforward and fun. For a 12-page adventure, this delivers.

The second story, “Follow and Lead,” is written by Sam Maggs and illustrated by Davide Tinto. It’s a short, “done in one” story of Kylo Ren and a planet the First Order has conquered. How does he present himself to them as Supreme Leader and what happens when they resist? It has depth while not being too complicated. The writing is engaging as is the art. This is a story that should have been told while the movies were still being made.

This issue truly hearkens back to comics of old. It is simple, well written, unpretentious, and self-contained fun. It can be read by anyone at any time and enjoyed.  My only issue is that it should have been published 3 years ago.

Highly recommended. 3.5 out of 4 stars
