I first came across Jason Aaron’s name from his run on Thor, and, oh my, what a run it has been. He really knows how to spin a yarn, so when I saw his name on a science fiction series, a small portion of me shrieked for joy. Here, he’s writing with Dennis Hallum who has been working with Marvel for just shy of ten years. I don’t know his work as well, but so far so good.

The first issue of Sea of Stars sets us up for a coming-of-age odyssey, as Gil Starx – a celestial truck driver piloting the Porkchop Comet (Big Trouble in Little China reference anyone?) for the Intergalactic Parcel Service – makes his way across the universe with his son Kadyn. Gil is trying to make the best of a trip that Kadyn finds tedious. It doesn’t help that the recent death of the mother hangs over their interactions. Something goes horribly wrong, and the two are separated in space. That…is frightening…

Stephen Green brings some pretty epic imagery to this first issue. You can feel the expanse of space and the creatures that inhabit it. Rico Renzi’s coloring brings those celestial purples, blues, and reds to vibrant life. Space feels limitless in their hands, so I can only imagine what’s in store for our characters.

This first issue brings to mind titles like Swiss Family Robinson, Lost in Space, The Journey of Natty Gann, and other family adventure stories, and, so far, it’s struck that tone perfectly. Jump in now and join me on this odyssey.
