‘Little Bird #4:’ Advance Comic Book Review

What a strangely beautiful and poetic world Poelgeest, Bertram, and Hollingsworth have created. All of the characters have one foot in the afterlife and one fighting for freedom and justice in this alternate universe to our own. Though, like with all incredible sci-fi, one can see the exaggerated and hyper-realistic elements of our own world in theirs.

In Little Bird, the Catholic Church has become the political power, and they have used techno-magic and extreme violence to overthrow and control the indigenous peoples of this world. Yeah, there’s a lot going on here – even a Reverend Mother floating around in weird energy balls. It takes just a few pages to care about any one of these characters, and since Poelgeest and Bertram have no problem making the difficulty of what our heroes are trying to accomplish literally impossible, prepare yourself for some casualties.

In the beginning, Little Bird was sent by her mother, a fierce warrior, to find an even fiercer warrior to help their cause. Since that moment, Little Bird has lived in a dream state, learning that she’s far more than who she thought she was.

But, a hero is only as great as the villain, and the villain in this book is next level: a cruel, malicious pope who is training his sick son to be as evil as he is. Little Bird and the sickly boy become mirrors of one another.

This is a powerful series. The imagery overpowers me and is quite haunting. The words sink in deep, and they truly have beauty. The ideas excite me; they are complex and do not hide behind the harsh realities that these characters face. Even at its most disheartening and tragic, Little Bird is also thoughtful and reaches a level of serene beauty.

I can’t give enough praise for this book.
