Fanbase Press Interviews Michelle E. Lowe on the Steampunk/Fantasy Novel, ‘Legacy’

The following is an interview with Michelle E. Lowe regarding the release of her new Steampunk/fantasy novel, Legacy. In this interview, Fanbase Press Editor-in-Chief Barbra Dillon chats with Lowe about the inspiration behind Legacy and its larger series, what she hopes that readers will take away from her work, and more!

Barbra Dillon, Fanbase Press Editor-in-Chief: Congratulations on the release of your Steampunk/fantasy novel, Legacy!  For those who may be unfamiliar, how would you describe the book’s premise, and what inspired you to tell this story?

Michelle E. Lowe: Thank you! Legacy takes place in the early 1800s as the world is discovering so many different inventions and new technologies. In the midst of all of this is a famous thief, Pierce Landcross, who constantly runs into trouble everywhere he goes. In this story, he’s roped into finding his old friend, Indigo Peachtree, the Toymaker, who is being hunted by Tarquin Norwich, who needs the Toymaker for his own evil plan.

BD: What can you share with us about your creative process in writing the book, and what have been some of your creative influences?

MEL: Wine is a great way to get the creativity flowing. Kidding, not kidding. My creative process pretty much consists of me simply sitting down and putting pen to paper. Throughout the day, bits of a story will speak up, tear its way through the mundane of my average thoughts, and start giving me ideas of how to develop this tale.

Influence-wise, I’ve always been a huge fan of fantasy and adventure stories. I grew up watching movies like Indiana Jones and The NeverEnding Story and cartoons like She-Ra and ThunderCats. I would imagine myself there in those worlds, sharing those adventures. Even before I decided that I wanted to pursue writing as a career, I always had this desire to tell my own fictional tales. I suppose, I just wanted to be part of such a magical thing.

BD: As this book is the first chapter in a larger series, what can you tell us about your process for laying the groundwork for the overall story?

MEL: Before I even published the first book, I decided it was best to write out the entire series. It took a year and half of constant writing and then three years more to edit. In doing so, I was not only able to make sure there would be a steady flow throughout each story, and (although these books can be read as standalones), each of these novels are greatly linked to one another. Writing all the stories back to back also gave me room to incorporate hints of Legacy’s standalone, Boom Time, as well as infuse some details about the next upcoming series, The Age of the Machine.

BD: For readers who may be new to your work and starting with Legacy, do you feel that they would find a similar home with your previous works, Atlantic Pyramid and The Warning?

MEL: Maybe not so much. I tend to write in different genres. While Legacy is fantasy, mixed with Steampunk, Atlantic Pyramid is a sci-fiction thriller that takes place within the mysterious realm of the Bermuda Triangle, and The Warning is a sci-fiction murder mystery, set in the near future of New York, about a young man, Nikolai, being wrongly accused of killing his ex-girlfriend, and while on run he has to find out why.

BD: What do you hope that readers will take away from your work?

MEL: Surprise. Satisfaction. A sense that the time they had carved out to read the book was time well spent. In a lot of my stories, there are many moments where the reader will have no idea why this particular moment or character is there, only to soon discover their importance, which my readers love. I’d like to constantly keep readers guessing and when the answer is finally revealed, it isn’t what they were expecting in the least.

BD: Are there any upcoming projects on which you are currently working that you would like to share with our readers?

MEL: I’m currently working on getting Boom Time ready for publication in August and also typing out the first book of The Age of the Machine series. I write all my first drafts in longhand and then go back and type it in. I plan for The Age of the Machine to be a four-part series, but we’ll just see how that goes.

BD: Lastly, what is the best way for our readers to find more information about Legacy and your other work?

MEL: People can find everything and more at the below links. Thank you, Fanbase Press, for this interview!
