Saga #1: The Triumphant Return of Brian K. Vaughan

SagaBy Michael Fitzgerald Troy

It’s been a long time since you’ve been around. It’s been a long time since you’ve been in town. Brian K. Vaughan is my absolute favorite comics writer. I would read the ingredients of dairy products if BKV wrote them. (Golly, maybe I should read the ingredients of dairy products!)

Brian is known best for his amazing Vertigo series, Y: The Last Man, taking the fantasy of being the only man on a planet of all women to a new level. BKV’s other noteworthy series, Ex Machina, featured a superhero-turned-mayor in a 9/11 climate. After finishing those series, it seemed Brian was LOST to us when he was lured by the temptation of writing in Hollywood.

I had the pleasure of meeting Brian not long after Y had finished it’s amazing run. He was the nicest, most gracious guy on the planet. I told him I was satisfied by the ending, although, I would terribly miss series protagonist Yorick Brown, as he had become a monthly part of my life that I always looked forward to. I’m sure he was bathed in relief to have a homosexual holler monkey gush on him. We didn’t hear too much from BKV after that, and I feared the permanent absence of one of my favorite writers.

March sees BKV’s triumphant return to comics with the release of his new creator-owned Image series, “Saga,” and I couldn’t be happier. We’re off to a good start as BKV introduces us to a fantasy, sci-fi, fictional world with his usual brand of intrigue and likable sarcastic characters with potty mouths. Series co-creator Fiona Staples is a gem with her gorgeous, easy art style. I would rather the story speak for itself – but you’re always in for a treat with a script from Brian.

“My four favorite words will always be page one panel one.” Welcome back, BKV. Welcome back. Welcome back. Welcome back.

Michael Troy is a deeply superficial person. Born in the midwest in the ’70s, Michael came to Los Angeles to pursue his bi-polar career path as an actor and artist. 2005 saw the release of Michael’s first published book, Homo-Hero’s Big Book of Fun and Adventure (www.greencandypress.com). Michael has contributed to the Lady Gaga comic book from Bluewater Productions and has his hand in various other upcoming projects. Michael has performed stand-up comedy at all of the major comedy clubs in Los Angeles and is making his triumphant return to the main stage of The Comedy Store in September. Michael offers an off-beat sense of humor as the star of such youtube cult classics As The Gays on Film (www.youtube.com/fullfrontaltv), A Minute With Margot, a loving tribute to Superman legend Margot Kidder (http://www.youtube.com/user/rktcommander), and currently hosts a vlog style series Lethally Blonde over at www.monsterburg.com. Sitting alongside industry heavyweight Phil Jimenez at the “Divas and Lassoes” panel for the 2010 San Diego comic-con, Michael maintains and cherishes his “underground” status. A staunch believer in Blonde Ambition, Michael hopes his new comic about shallow blonde super heroes in Los Angeles, The Blonde Squad, will set the world on fire (or at least brighten it a bit). Check out Michael Troy and Lethally Blonde updates here!!!
