Fanbase Press’ Geeky Love Letters: A Love Letter to ‘Letterkenny’

Love is in the air at Fanbase Press! In this magical month of romance and enchantment, the Fanbase Press Staff and Contributors decided to stop and smell the roses. Throughout the week of Valentine’s Day, a few members of the Fanbase Press crew will be sharing their personal love letters to the areas of geekdom they adore the most.

Letterkenny! How’re ya now?

This may be the softest thing I’ve ever said, but… it’s not easy loving you. Watching you brings me so much joy, but hardly any of my friends have seen you. You’re filled with some of the best catchphrases and most memorable lines on television, and whenever I try to quote them, all I get are blank stares.

For Halloween last year, I wore a pretty great Squirrely Dan costumes, but there wasn’t a single person at the party – the entire night – who could properly appreciates it. Nobody had even heard of Letterkenny, much less seen a single episode. I got a few replies when I put the pictures on my <censored> Facebook, but even so, it was disappointing to say the least.

Still, even though it can feel isolating loving a show that so few others know, I know that they’re the ones who are missing out. It’s like a whole other world that I’m part of and they’re not. So, despite the weird looks I sometimes get, will I ever stop quoting you in random conversations? Hard no!

To be fair, I only just got into you a few months ago myself. Still, I can’t stop watching you. I’ve said, “I can see myself watching this again and again,” about a lot of shows and movies in my time, but with you, I already have. There are several seasons that I’ve watched two and three times now, and a few episodes and scenes that I’ll just come back to on a whim, because something reminded me of a funny quote from them.

No matter what kind of mood I’m in, you never fail to make me laugh. I could listen to Wayne, Dary, Katy, and Squirrely Dan go back and forth with puns on movie titles and celebrity names all day. Your seasons are painfully short, but when you release one whole season in October and another in December of the same year, it manages to make up for it.

More than just funny lines, though, you’ve got heart. Somehow, you make me genuinely care about all of your characters—even the ones that aren’t supposed to be particularly likable. McMurray is vulgar and off-putting, but he’s got your back when you need him. Jonesy and Reilly may be douchey and annoying, but I still want to see them get those W’s, ferda. And so many characters that started off as antagonists have ended up becoming important parts of the Letterkenny community.

I could go on and on about all the things I love about you, and everything you’ve meant to me. Unfortunately, I’m worried that to anyone who hasn’t seen you, all of these quotes, references, and reminiscences will just sound like an incomprehensible mess. And, like I already said… most of my friends still haven’t seen you.

In the end, though, that’s not what’s important. I have found a few friends to share you with who understand the quotes and references, and that helps. But what really matters is this: You’re always there for me when I need you, and that’s what I appreciates about you.

Pitter patter, let’s get at ‘er,
Steve
