To My Dearest Dark Horse,

Given the upcoming annual celebration of love and adoration, it seemed absolutely necessary to look back upon our long love affair.

You’re a sonofab---h, Parker.

You don’t give a damn about anybody and don’t ever leave well enough alone. You are the guy Lee Child and Tom Cruise wish Jack Reacher was. You make Rocky look like Rocky V. You are the toughest, meanest, and most relentless crook this side of anywhere.

To the book I can't quit reading,

“It was a pleasure to burn. It was a special pleasure to see things eaten, to see things blackened and changed.” – Ray Bradbury, Fahrenheit 451, Pg. 1

Few books burn their opening lines into me. I read voraciously with a critical eye and very little loyalty. When a book starts to lose me, I am quick to turn it out to the street. Life is too short to read bad books.

Dear Megan Ellison,

I’m a big fan of the old school, classic version of TV’s Law and Order.  The Special Victims Unit version is way too lurid for me (There are only so many child rapes a person can stomach.) but watching the old Law and Order is the TV equivalent of eating potato chips, particularly the Jerry Orbach years.  I especially love any episode where the perp was some obnoxious, entitled rich kid from the Upper West Side whose sniveling parents were using their great wealth to help their kid avoid jail.  Of course, Sam Waterston was having none of that.  It was a revenge fantasy for the Ninety-Nine Percenters long before Occupy Wall Street.

To my Valentine, Discworld:

D is for the way you Draw me so fully into your rich and vibrant narrative. I is for the Idiosyncratic sense of . . .

Just kidding.

Really, don’t worry. I’ve stopped.

Dear Mr. Whedon,

I am not even sure where to begin. Um . . . Well . . . It’s like . . . Well, I feel . . . You see . . . Before you . . . There once was . . . A long time ago . . . Back in the day . . . It goes like this . . . I . . . Uh . . . Guh . . . Eh . . . A . . .

From Superman to Joss Whedon, the Fanboy Comics staffers are really just big softies under that geeky exterior. We hope that you will enjoy this glimpse into the minds (and hearts) of Fanboy Comics!

Dear Hitchhiker’s Guide,

How do I love thee? I won’t count the ways, but if I did, you can bet there’d be 42. I’ve fallen in love with so many books in my life, more than I could ever count, but when someone asks me to list my favorites, I don’t even have to think about it. You’ll always be right at the top. You’ve been with me through good times and bad. Through Vogons and Pan Galactic Gargle Blasters. And, whenever I seem to be having tremendous difficulty with my lifestyle, you tell me “Don’t Panic,” and cheer me up like Eccentrica Gallumbits, the—OK, I’ll stop with the references now.

Dear Superman/Clark/Kal-El,

We have never formally met, but we are fated to be together. Oh, I know you’re probably thinking, "but I’m with Lois Lane, silly girl. Have you never read a comic, watched TV, seen a movie, or opened your eyes? Interacted in modern society?” but do you really want a woman who was, frankly, too dim witted to not know who you were because of a pair of glasses? She is supposed to be a world-class reporter for God’s sake! Now, granted, the new series with Amy Adams is redeeming the character slightly . . . but our story has been written long before in the legends of my mind.

Kou Shuurei e,

As the weather gradually gets warmer, the first buds will begin appearing on the trees in your family’s garden. Each fresh blossom or green leaf represents a new beginning and the strength to keep going forward, something that you, my dear Shuurei, epitomize.
