Sunday, September 3, 2017. It was high noon at the Long Beach Convention Center as the final day of Long Beach Comic Con was well under way. Arriving on time and chatting jovially with attendees, legendary artist/writer Dave Gibbons was easygoing and happy as he settled down for panel spotlight on his career. Director of Programming Ivan Cohen, who had been conducting spotlights throughout the weekend – including William Shatner and Howard Chaykin – sat down to discuss Gibbons' career in comics that began approximately 40 years ago.
Spotlight panels are often a great feature of a convention’s programming in that they offer special guests with the opportunities to highlight their work, but also to give audience members and fans a Q&A session. Over the weekend, Long Beach Comic Con had a handful of spotlight panels for celebrities and guests such as William Shatner, Dave Gibbons, and Howard Chaykin.
Editor Barbara Randall Kesel led back-to-back valuable instructional panels Saturday afternoon, September 2, 2017, at the Long Beach Comic Con. Her first panel, “Pitch, Pitch, Pitch: How to Sell Your Story,” provided advice to writers who are trying to sell their stories, but what about artists who are looking to develop a portfolio to showcase their art to prospective editors? Not to worry; Kesel was joined by Eisner Award-winning artist Pia Guerra (Y: The Last Man) and freelance Photoshop production artist John Ercek (Executive Assistant Assassins series from Aspen Comics) to share their knowledge and answer questions from the audience in the follow-up panel, “Creating the Perfect Portfolio.”
The first weekend of September is the last vestiges of summer, as children begin to transition back to school and the final BBQs are had on Labor Day. It’s also when the first signs of Halloween begin to pop up, as large sacks of candy and Halloween decorations begin to gain more real estate at grocery and department stores. It’s never too early to start mulling over the spookier things in life.
