While the idea of a webcomic about super-powered beings is not unusual, there are very few in which one of the super-powered beings is a huge comic book geek who runs their own store. With all of the grace and social skills of a flamethrower, Sydney Scoville finds her world turned upside down when she decides to go to the bank to deposit the store’s receipts. Following her on her whirlwind adventure is very entertaining, especially considering she has no idea how she does what she does, making her the perfect person to be recruited for the government. Original Daredevil Archives V1While this superhero is good at being “the man without fear,” as well as being masked and in (partial) red, he’s not Matt Murdock and he doesn’t live in New York City.  A pulp classic hero from the 1940s, back when beating up the Axis Powers in comic books was common practice, this Daredevil relishes in sticking it to der Führer and his plans for world domination.  Published at a time when good always triumphed over evil, this collection of comics shows just what the world was thinking back in the 1940s, both good and bad.

Suffering from a rare blood disease, the Greek scientist spent his life researching ways to keep himself alive without detrimental effects. Believing that he found the answer in vampire bats, the egotistical biochemist began to exhibit characteristics that made him seem to be a creature of the night. A “villain” more out of necessity than any nefarious plot, Michael spent the rest of his life fighting against his darker nature, attempting to cure himself of a new disease, and coming to terms with the fact that many see him as nothing more than Morbius, the Living Vampire.

As a kid of the '80s, I grew up with several toys and cartoons, but one of the most interesting to me at the time was G.I. Joe—not because of any violent, reactionary equation, but of the simple aspect of a group of remarkable individuals coming together to fight for the side of good in a battle against evil. At the time I had very little interest in comics overall and hardly ever played a video game (aside from failing often at Mario 3), but the Joes were able to pique my interest like no other toy/comic/cartoon could. To this day, I still cannot fully explain (to myself or others) just why I enjoy the Joes, but I’m going to do my best right here, right now, for your entertainment purposes.

Trapped in the most vicious, uncivilized part of the world, Logan teams up with a scientist and a she-devil to figure out why he’s been discarded at Earth’s South Pole. Facing monsters, genetic mutations, and indigenous tribespeople, the man who won’t die has to learn to work well with others to figure out what’s going on, but that won’t be easy for the Savage Wolverine.

Out ThereWorld of Webcomics is a series devoted to exploring the world of online comics and their target audiences, as well as their art styles, storylines, and the general enjoyment that they provide.

When I first started graduate school in 2008, I had to give up reading webcomics because of how much time I needed to devote to work and studying. At the time, I had just started reading Out There and wasn’t entirely sure what I thought of it, but was willing to give it a chance. Now, years later, I’ve finally been able to go back and catch up on all the webcomics I was reading, and I’ve come to find some things have changed . . . and some things have not. Centered on the life of a nomadic “wild” woman who puts down roots, Out There gives a very practical approach to day-to-day life with every common and realistic encounter, even if some of them seem a bit implausible. Originally updating every day, Out There comes out with a new comic every Wednesday at outthere.keenspot.com.

A secret cabal of the most powerful and influential men in the world meet every now and then to discuss the way the world should be run. Dubbed the Illuminati, the group formed right after the initial Kree-Skrull conflict and has been keeping tabs on Earth’s goings-on for years. Guided by their concept of good and right, these men come together once more to protect an endangered Earth in a more direct fashion, and while they may not be Luke Cage’s team, they are the New Avengers..

Sequential Art logoWorld of Webcomics is a series devoted to exploring the world of online comics and their target audiences, as well as their art styles, storylines, and the general enjoyment that they provide.

The best way I can describe this comic is a slice-of-life with some very unusual aspects that one normally wouldn’t find in reality. The titular character, Art, has a couple of friends/housemates who he keeps getting involved with when they have weird adventures, much to his dismay, but he seems to be able to handle it quite well. Sequential Art tries to update on a Monday-Wednesday-Friday schedule, but it isn’t always doable, at collectedcurios.com/sequentialart.php.

Disillusioned by how mutants continue to be regarded by the public and fellow superheroes in general, Scott Summers calls for a revolution to ensure the stability of the next stage of evolution. Teaming up with some of his former Extinction Team colleagues, Summers scours the world for new mutants to help train for the coming battle against humanity, acutely aware that the world sees him as a threat to peace and stability as well as an enemy of the Avengers. While he no longer possesses the controlled and delicate precision over his abilities he once did, he nonetheless leads his group onto the idealogical battlefield against his fellow mutants to keep the future safe for his species. Rogue leader and iconic revolutionary, Cyclops leads his band of Uncanny X-Men.
