‘Sherlock Holmes: The Seven-Per-cent Solution #5’ – Comic Book Review

This is the final installment of the joint adventure of Mr. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Sigmund Freud, and it’s not lacking for excitement. It includes a train chase, a swordfight, and a race against the clock to save an innocent woman’s life and prevent a global war. What it doesn’t have is much actual mystery. Everything was solved in the previous issue, so this one is all about the consequences of that solution.

The pacing for this story has been a bit odd throughout the entire arc. The actual mystery isn’t even introduced until the third issue, and it’s virtually solved by the end of the fourth. Still, there’s plenty to make this comic worth reading, even without a traditional “Sherlock Holmes mystery” in it. Plus, there are still a few loose ends that are wrapped up quite nicely in this issue.

I haven’t read the original novel by Nicholas Meyer on which this comic is based, so I don’t know how faithful it is or how much was cut from it. I would be interested to do so, though, to get the complete story and see if it has the same odd pacing.

Pacing aside, this is a fun story that generally remains true to the character of Sherlock Holmes. If you’re a fan of Holmes stories or mysteries in general, you’ll probably want to check this one out.
