‘Welcome Back #3:’ Advance Comic Book Review

The eternal war rages on in this twisted tale of murder, destiny, and reincarnation. Our hero, Mali/Maizie, is a soldier in that war who has lived and fought over a thousand lifetimes—and has decided she’s had enough. In the previous issue, she made it clear to her superiors that she had no intention of fighting in this war anymore, or of killing the woman whom she’s been tasked with killing since birth.

In this issue, she starts to embrace her destiny – the bloodlust, the chase, the sick thrill of fighting that she’s finally starting to remember from her previous lives. She wonders if she can still feed that bloodlust without actually taking up arms in the eternal war or killing the people she’s meant to kill. Meanwhile, Mali’s stepfather, now reincarnated as a violent and bloodthirsty six-year-old girl, does what he can to protect Mali from the enemy coming after her.

If this seems a bit confusing, that’s because it is. There are a number of threads to this story and a lot of players on both side of the chessboard that is this war. There’s still a lot that’s unknown, as well. Maybe it will be revealed in the end, and maybe it won’t. For the moment, it can be kind of confusing, at times, and difficult to follow. Even so, though, it’s a unique story and a fun read with plenty of action.

We’re nearing the end of this story arc, and it’s been quite a ride. It’s certainly not for everyone, but if you don’t mind a complex, sometimes confusing plot, peppered liberally with a bit of violent action, then you’ll probably enjoy Welcome Back. I know I’m looking forward to seeing how things play out.
