Batgirl #1 Review

batgirl1 a11The DC reboot is upon us, comic book sniffers! Welcome to the new DC universe! In an effort to help bring new readers into the world of comics, the Fanboy Comics staff has decided to review at least five new #1 issues each week of September, DC’s reboot launch month.

Okay, okay, so you want to bring Barbara Gordon back to the action?  Make her Batgirl once again?  But, wait – what about Stephanie Brown, Cassandra Cain, Helena Bertinelli (albeit briefly and before sacked by Batman), or Betty Kane?  (Ah ha! You forgot about Betty Kane, didn’t you? Well, Wikipedia didn’t!)  I mean, isn’t Barbara Gordon Oracle?  Who’s going to be Oracle now?  Okay, DC, I’ll shut up and read the comic.

Okay, I’m reading, but how is she running around?  Wasn’t Barbara Gordon paraly- What’s that?  Keep reading, you say?  Oh.  Okay, you’ll explain it; I just need to keep reading.  I see. Well, I just won’t mention the fact that we’ve had 23 years of a paralyzed Barbara Gordon, and you’re retconning it into three comic book years.  I suppose I can buy that.  Why yes, DC, the story is good.  Oh, yes, I do like the creepy villain called “Mirror,” and his/her list of people to kill certainly intrigues me.  Oh, I do also enjoy seeing Barbara Gordon fighting crime in the Batgirl suit again, *cough*cough*-never-mind-that-she’s-30-some-odd-years-old-and-still-goes-by-Batgirl*cough* -What’s that you say? Oh, you said,  “What’s that you say,” too. Haha.  Nothing, jut a bit of a cough.  I’ll shut up and keep reading.  Oh!  Yes!  Gail Simone does an excellent job giving us a compelling story.  No, it’s not that I’m not satisfied with it, I just don’t see why it has to be about Barbara Gordon.  Considering what she’s been through, it just seems kinda cheap.  No, I do like the $2.99 price point, I’m just saying . . . Okay, sure, I’ll shut up and keep reading…  Hey, yeah, so, I’m finished.  But, I think I may have missed something.  Here I am, I’ve read issue one, and why can she suddenly walk again?  I’m still not sure.  Yes, you have essentially retained the character’s history, but I just don’t see why yet?  Why does she need to be able to walk to move out of her Dad’s house?  Why wasn’t Barbara Gordon good enough as Oracle?  Why can’t Stephanie Brown continue as Batgirl?  Is Spoiler really more important to fans than Oracle?  Oh, okay, I’m sorry.  I’ll just shut up and keep reading.
