The New Marvel: 'Journey into Mystery'

Journey into Mystery 646 Marvel NOWThe New Marvel is a series that looks at the changes that the mega-comic empire made following the events of Avengers vs. X-Men and the impact that those changes have on the stories of Marvel NOW!  Six issues (or more) into each Marvel NOW! title, we see what our favorite characters are up to and what to keep an eye out for in the future.

The home of Asgardia has been fully established over Broxton, its warriors and defenders ready to fight back the continuing onslaught of villains attempting to raze the city to the ground once again. Throughout the battles and engagements, a shieldmaiden of the Gods fights for the safety of her home and her beloved Thor: Sif, a warrior in her own right and sister to the all-seeing Heimdall, grows tired of the countless wars, wanting to protect her home and those of Midgard without tiresome battles. She seeks out a way to gain prominence over her abilities, to become a better warrior; a quest that becomes a Journey into Mystery.

Covering Issues #646-651

I know very little about Marvel’s Asgardian mythos, but I have always enjoyed the fact that there was a warrior woman who was not afraid to stand up for her rights to defend her people and herself. A true heroine of Asgardia, a cherished associate of Thor, and a threat to machinations of Loki, Sif is a true warrior who won’t back down from a fight; however, such a situation has also gotten her into trouble. She sees the constant engagements that the Asgardians deal with to be tiresome, energy-draining, taking away time that could be spent on building crops or enjoying a nice summer’s day. Sif wants to end the fighting, to become a peaceful woman rather than a battle-hardened shieldmaiden, but when she makes a choice to try and accomplish this, she unleashes a disaster that could spell doom for Asgardia and Midgard. Can we say, “Uh oh?”

I am very much anxious to see what more adventures befall Sif and the Warriors Three within the realm of Asgardia, especially given the location of the floating city. And, while Loki is making strides within the Young Avengers title, will he show up to cause his normal amount of mischief for the good defenders of the Earth? I hope so, but I also hope he has some better plans, because this is a new age, and Sif stands ready to keep it alive and going.
