‘Lantern City #9:’ Advance Comic Book Review

When last we saw Sander, he had literally jumped from the frying pan and into the fire when he helped Killian fake his own death and snuck out of the city in his dirigible. Now, Sander comes face to face with a people he thought long dead.

Killian has forged an uneasy alliance with those known as The Fortache.  Descended from them, Sander longed believed that his heritage and his people no longer existed.  It’s not long before Sander is despised by their leader, yet befriended by a woman named  Arah. It is through her that Sander learns how important the city is to them.  The Fortache’s goal is to live in Lantern City, not realizing that it is no paradise.  Now, Killian is forging them into an army to depose Brother Pont and his men.  When Sander sees the antiquated weapons Killian is giving them, he quickly realizes that The Fortache will be used as cannon fodder.  But, when he tells Arah of his suspicions, she runs off. Will Sander be Killian’s next target when he discovers his betrayal or has he just unwittingly made an alliance of his own?

One of the things I like about Lantern City is that the story jumps right into the action and quickly develops story and character. This issue is no different.  I also like the fact that we are finally outside of the city and seeing what life is like there. Though I think a better choice could have been made rather than having noble savages (The Fortache) living in teepees in the wilderness.  The art is gorgeous as usual, and I appreciate how the coloring sets off this world outside Lantern City – especially how the glow of the dirigible shadows its environs in the evening.

The whole series has been a fun ride, and I look forward to seeing how this all plays out.
