‘Terminator Salvation: The Final Battle #5’ – Advance Comic Book Review

John Connor is back in full force in this latest installment of Terminator Salvation: The Final Battle #5 from Dark Horse Comics.   J. Michael Straczynski of Babylon 5 fame, along with numerous other credits, writes this ostensibly final series with art by Pete Woods, colors by Matthew Wilson, and lettering by Nate Peikos of Blambot.  The heat is on as Skynet begins to employ its new weapon against the humans.

The final battles of the war against Skynet rages on as John Connor prepares to send Kyle Reese back in time to save his mother, Sarah Connor.  John and his men are deep into strategy sessions when they realize the Terminators are attacking with a viciousness previously unseen.  Little do they know they are faced with a foe never before encountered: the psyche of serial murderer Thomas Parnell.  Taking control of the Terminator ground forces, Parnell terminates all humans with orgasmic pleasure.  It is definitely not a morale booster for the humans. Seeing what she has wrought in the part-human, part-cyborg Parnell, Dr. Kogan finally shows a sense of remorse; unfortunately for her, Parnell sees it also.  Plans on both sides proceed to lead to what will be the ultimate showdown between man and machine in later issues.

Fast paced and brisk, this issue focuses on action and delivers in spades. There is also just the right amount of techno-babble to give us a sense that these people know exactly what they are talking about and no one here is stupid.  And, it gives us science fictions fans more futuristic technology to drool over; however, my main concern still stands as it has done in previous issues. We root for John Connor, because we’re supposed to. Granted, he’s trying to save humanity, but he isn’t a particularly interesting character nor have we seen the strength of character needed for people to follow him into battle.  He gives the orders and he’s smart, but he was never given the same time to develop like Thomas Parnell and Dr. Kogan. It was very nice to see Kogan actually begin to think about the decisions she’s made, even it was brief. The art is spot on, and the coloring really makes the action sequences stand out, giving us a sense of the “heat” of war and the “cold” machinery of death.

All in all, a very strong issue which promises more action and Terminator fun and destruction in our future and theirs.  Definitely for the hardcore Terminator fan, the fifth issue will be available on April 2nd at your local comic book stores.
