‘Doomsday.1 #1:’ Advance Comic Book Review [It’s the End of the World As We Know It (and Now Everything’s On Fire!)]

Doomsday.1 1

Doomsday.1 1When a massive solar flare hits the Earth, wiping away whole continents and oceans, only a select few groups are able to survive the catastrophe, including the team aboard the International Space Station. What’s left behind? Can society start anew with so little? These are questions the few survivors are going to have to ask if they plan on living in a post-Doomsday world.

Doomsday.1 #1 sets up our catastrophe, introducing each of the scientists and pilots aboard the ISS as they detect the incoming flare heading for the Earth. Not all that surprising, many of these people don’t like each other very much, different nationalities and beliefs coming to the surface while they’re forced to work together. This first issue does a fine job of introducing the ISS characters, showing their different interactions with one another, their respective specialties, and emotional baggage, but there is so much jumping around that I don’t have the strongest handle on them as characters and wouldn’t say I exactly like any of them.

Of far more interest in this issue is how the world reacts to the news of its impending destruction. Issues of leadership and religion arise that make you wonder how the world would react if it was the end of all things. As part of this reaction are several other potential groups that may have survived the flare, which has set my mind to spinning on all the possibilities and who our protagonists might actually run across. Bad news though, ladies, these possible survival scenarios make it rather unlikely that a lot of us survived. Stupid patriarchy. On the bright side, Doomsday.1 does have an awesome Madam President!

Overall, Doomsday.1 #1 is a solid end-of-the-world story and creates a new playground of possibilities.
