‘Tomb Raider #4:’ Advance Comic Book Review

I know what you were all up to this weekend . . . playing Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, weren’t you?  Do I know my readers well or what?!

In the meantime, for those non-gamers out there, at least we have the latest Tomb Raider comic book series by Dark Horse Comics to keep us entertained. After all, some would argue that Nathan Drake is simply a male version of Lara Croft herself.

Speaking of whom, our tomb raiding heroine, along with the help of her friends (or rather her heightened senses), were able to escape a near plane crash in last month’s issue! But, leave it to Professor Demur to get captured, the very reason they were trying to take him to the jungle in the first place. And when Lara tries to rescue him, she gets knocked out . . . in running rapids!

Thankfully, Jonah is there to save Lara when she needs him most in this month’s issue, Tomb Raider #4. After nearly drowning and a good night’s rest in the jungle, Lara is led to the caves where Demur has already led his captures. Both parties are in search of the Professor’s magical mushroom, but why do I have the feeling that only one of these groups will make it to the prize before something terrible happens!

What would we do without an amazing team behind this fantastic series? As my first set of Tomb Raider comic books, but most definitely not my first comic book reads, Mariko Tamaki is an excellent story writer. Each issue is simple and no more than what it needs to be. Too many times, comic book writers make their stories too elaborate, involve too many characters, and, in turn, readers can lose interest. But, with Tamaki’s uncomplicated storyline, along with beautiful artwork by Phillip Sevy and colors by Michael Atiyeh, this series is truly one of the best on the shelves!

As always, however, it looks like we have to wait until June to find out if Lara can make it out of those caves . . . alive!

Until next month,

#LaraCroftIsMyHero
