A Love Letter to Alan Rickman

Love is in the air at Fanboy Comics! In this magical month of romance and enchantment, the FBC Staff and Contributors decided to stop and smell the roses. In the days leading up to Valentine’s Day, a few members of the Fanboy Comics crew will be sharing their personal love letters to the areas of geekdom they adore the most.

Dear Alan Rickman,

We all know you’ll never read this letter—at least from Earth for all we know—but you deserve this loving tribute nonetheless.

For me, you’re the first celebrity to die (hard) that has extremely affected me. (See what I did there?) Your passing affected many muggles, both young and old, because I hope you realize how much of an influence you were to so many people.

I mean, you were probably the leading actor—for me—to actually make me fall in love with Love Actually. I hated that movie at first! But, you always knew how to give each and every role your best, whether you were supporting a lead or acting as one, and this movie was certainly no exception.

Then, when you wanted me to hate you, despise you, or even loath you, you knew how to do that, as well. Die Hard is one of the cheesiest action movies I’ve ever seen, but do you know why everyone loves it? Because of you! Your portrayal of Hans Gruber puts you right on that list of Top Movie Villains of All Time, along with Darth Vader and He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named.

Speaking of Voldemort, let’s talk about Harry Potter, shall we? I don’t even know what to say besides thank you! Professor Snape was a d–k! Any of us who read those books from the beginning knew he was evil. We were sure of it! But, you . . . YOU alone brought life into that character. Even J.K. Rowling would agree with me on that. YOU made us see Snape differently. Through different eyes. Through your eyes. Through Lily’s eyes. Eyes that are now covered in tears . . .

Eyes are weeping all over the world after your loss, and if I had my own resurrection stone to bring you back, I would. But, perhaps I don’t need it. Because just like Snape, and just how you protected Harry throughout his schooling career, your work will also be here for us. To protect us from your loss. To guide us as actors, even as human beings, to strive to be the best we can (love) actually be . . .

You will be missed, Professor. My wand is raised for you this Valentine’s Day . . .

Alohomora,
