‘TMNT Classics, Volume 9:’ Advance TPB Review

Wow. Talk about an amazing tribute to our pizza-loving heroes! I picked up Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Classics, Volume 9, simply because I’ve been reviewing all the other TMNT comic books, so I figured, “Why not?” But, man, this was more than just a blast from the past!

The volume starts out with a revived comic book issue from August 1994, and I immediately noticed a huge difference that 20 years has made: more panels, less text. I love that! As a slow reader, I felt as though I was whizzing through this entire storyline in the blink of an eye. It made me realize that comic books should always focus more on the artwork. I don’t need text to understand what’s going on, and I think writers these days feel that their audience isn’t smart enough to follow along. But, we are . . .

And, the series itself was truly something spectacular! It starts out like any action movie from the ’90s would—random guy in a phone booth that suddenly blows up. Next, we see a robot flipping through the yellow pages (Remember those???), but who is he looking up? Finally, our story begins with April O’Neil driving to the grocery story when the same robot attacks and threatens her with, “And, this is just a sample of the pain I’m going to cause you!” Next thing we know, our heroes are hunting down a robot in the name of justice . . . and answers!

Although this volume leaves us with a MAJOR cliffhanger, I must give kudos to veteran writer and artist Jim Lawson for such a creative and intriguing story. I’m inclined to find the rest of the series online, because I was that enthralled with the storyline. Even the artwork was different enough to spike my interest. Shout-out to Eric Talbot, as well, for his beautiful ink work. This volume was clearly a team effort!

So, if you’re looking for a quick read and a bit of a nostalgic break from our present day, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Classics, Volume 9 is a must have in any fan’s collection! Unless, of course, you have the originals. In which case, don’t ruin the ending for me. I’m about to go find out for myself . . .
