This book has a lot of great things going for it: action, intrigue, compelling characters. It just takes a long time to get the story going. Once all the pieces are set up, though, it is a roller coaster to a strong conclusion. The good parts about this book are the great cast of characters, the action-packed art, and the looming threat of war that keeps the stakes so high throughout the book. The only bad thing about the book is the meandering pace of the first few chapters. In fact, they could have cut some from the beginning and added more action to the end, so it didn't feel like everything resolved so quickly.
All said and done, this book is a worthwhile read, if for nothing else than creating the awesome character of Theron, a welcome addition to the Star Wars family. He takes a top spot among favorites like Talon Karrde, Han Solo, and Corran Horn. This book is an awesome origin story for him, but the entire book feels more like set up for his future adventures than a strong stand alone story. This book is recommended for hard core Star Wars fans who want to read every story created, or for those who can't get enough of the Old Republic time line, but as a casual Star Wars reader, it might be best to start with something a little more closely tied to the movies. If you do choose to read this book, push through the slower early chapters, as the finale is definitely worth it.
