3 Comics You Can’t Miss! 7/6/12 Comic Reviews

Danger Club 3Fanboy Comics Contributor Jason Enright brings you his top comic book picks for the week.

Danger Club #3
by Landry Q. Walker, Eric Jones, and Michael Drake

Danger Club is this awesome book about a group of sidekicks who must find a way to protect their world after all the heroes have died trying to stop an incoming threat from outer space. The book is dark, violent, and really smart. Every issue opens with a page from an old school Danger Club from when the team were kids, and in every issue that little page gives you some clue to what the kids are up to in that issue. Walker is building a great story, and even though he has to juggle a lot of characters, he always manages to find time to flesh them out and include some real emotion in the book. The art from Jones and Drake is spectacular. They play off the colorful innocence of the sidekicks’ costumes and then sneak up on you with the dark, violent reality the kids are facing. Image has been putting out some awesome books lately, and Danger Club should be right on the top of your comic pile this week.

Earth 2 #3
by James Robinson, Nicola Scott, and Trevor Scott

Earth 2 continues to impress as we see the creation of a new super team. This issue, as the cover suggests, gives us the birth of this world’s Green Lantern, but with a very interesting, unique take on where his power comes from. His transformation into a superhero doesn’t come without a hefty price, though, and Robinson does a great job balancing the emotions with the cool superhero stuff. He even gives us a little humor in the Flash’s story to break up the heavy emotions of the Alan Scott origin. This new Green Lantern is very organic and fits very nicely into the mythology the New 52 books have been building. Nicola Scott’s art is pretty awesome in this book, too. Her character work is great, and I love her pacing, I just wish she was a little more creative with her panel work. So many artists of the new 52 have done a lot of experimentation with paneling that now when I get a book with simple block panels, I get a little bored. This is a great read for new readers or long-time comics fans, so make sure you pick it up this week.

Uncanny X-Men #15
by Kieron Gillen and Daniel Acuna

In all the craziness of Avengers vs. X-Men, Uncanny is still the place to go if you want to really understand why the X-Men are doing what they’re doing, and how they feel about their actions. Kieron Gillen never ceases to amaze me, as he puts together a well paced and exciting story that still leaves room for thoughtful and emotional character work. Even in this arc where the X-Men are taking a detour from beating up the Avengers to deal with one of the world’s villains, he still finds time to build character-specific plots and find the heart of each X-Man. Daniel Acuna’s art is just beautiful, too. Every page has detailed expressions, excellent layout, and awesome colors. Whether you are following AVX or not, this book is a must read.
