A Love Letter to Naughty Dog

Love is in the air at Fanboy Comics! In this magical month of romance and enchantment, the FBC Staff and Contributors decided to take a moment to stop and smell the roses. In the week leading up to Valentine’s Day, a few members of the Fanboy Comics crew will be sharing their very personal “Love Letters” with our readers, addressed to the ones that they adore the most.

Dearest Naughty Dog,

I’ve sat on this letter for a very long time, trying to figure out how to write it without sounding like the crazy, stalker gamer girl you turned me into after I first played Uncharted. But, I don’t think it’s possible to write such a love letter. So, instead, I’ll tell you how Uncharted came into my life, how it has influenced me, how it has affected me, and try not to have you take out a restraining order against me, so I can’t come within 200 yards of Nathan Drake ever again.

One day, a friend’s son and I were discussing video games. He asked me if I had ever played Uncharted. I, of course, had not (I was eternally committed to Resident Evil at the time). The next time I saw him, he handed me his copy of Uncharted 2. I went home and immediately popped it into my PS3. Upon completion, I raced out and purchased Uncharted 1 and subsequently put Uncharted 3 on pre-order.

First, came the music. This incredible, moving symphony of notes touched my very soul. It still warms my heart to listen to it today (and, yes, I do have the CD to listen to in my car).

Then, came the characters. The amazingly well-voiced, well-acted, and thoroughly developed characters. The father-son relationship between Sully and Drake. The love-hate relationship between Drake and Elena. That stupid Chloe who tried to steal Drake from Elena (but I still love her). Not to mention all the fully fleshed out side characters and the villains to beat all villains.

Of course, there’s the adventure, the action, the bit of paranormal and supernatural that permeate each game. The creatures that scare the hell out of me the first time I meet them. Whether it’s Crazy Eddy’s crew or some really messed up pirates, you always keep me on my toes.

And, through it all, there’s Nathan Drake: The reason why all women should play video games, since he turns this lifelong tomboy into a drooling mess. Not sure if it’s ’cause he’s drawn so well or if Nolan North’s voice is really speaking to me (even though Drake is looking at Elena), but Drake makes the game what it is. I love living his adventures while shooting up the bad guys, climbing across cliffs, solving puzzles, and laughing at his jokes.

I’ve played all three Uncharted games at least 100 times. I wish that was an understatement. I know every bit of the games, every corner, every turn. And, I love them more each time I play.

But, Uncharted has meant more to me than just hours of entertainment. When playing Uncharted 3 last May and watching the story of Drake and Sully’s first meeting unfold for the zillionth time, I formulated my own story of a man and a boy and their unique bond. Though my story is much different than any of Drake’s, I ended up publishing their story into a book. I also have little Uncharted Easter eggs for myself into another book I wrote, all my own little “love letter” to the Uncharted series and how much I adore the games. Uncharted is now as much a part of my life as anything else.

So, in closing, as I fight off my need to play again right now (and undoubtedly make my husband shake his head at my crazy obsession), I’ll say this. On behalf of me, my fanatical Drake friends here in the States and in Australia, and everyone else in the world who has loved Drake since the moment they laid eyes on him: If you kill him in Uncharted 4, we will all be devastated like never before. Please, please, please, please, please, please, please . . . do not kill him. It will result in a massive, hardcore gamer meltdown, reducing us to blubbering tears in unison all over the world. I just wanted to prepare you for what will happen. And, our tears will be on your hands. Your hands, Naughty Dog.

Thank you to Naughty Dog, Nolan North, Emily Rose, et. al. You have given this geeky gamer girl hours upon hours upon hours of happiness and enjoyment with games and characters I will always love and of which I’ll never grow weary.

Sincerely,
Angie Martin

P.S. If you make a movie, just a simple request: please all of us fans. Nathan Fillion isn’t completely out of the running for Drake . . . is he? Emily Rose would be the perfect Elena, FYI. She already has the voice! And, I kinda like Bruce Campbell as Sully. Just call me if you need any more casting ideas! (ha ha)
