Enter the Wasteland series. This first issue sees a team of B.P.R.D. agents led by the ethereal Johann sent to investigate the disappearance of some agents in Chicago during B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth: The Abyss of Time. It turns out the Ogdru Hem are at it again.
Issue #2 picks up with the Johann and company running into a little difficulty as a mysterious contagion floats through the air, turning all who breathe it into some type of plague-like zombie monsters. So, the agents of the B.P.R.D. are forced to carry gas masks everywhere with them, even so far as to sleep in them while Johann keeps watch. The monsters aren’t mindless, though, as once their numbers are thinned they retreat, following Johann and company while keeping their distance, always a lurking, distant threat.
As if that weren’t enough, in typical B.P.R.D. fashion, they encounter some very large, random creatures that end up helping Johann and gang with some interesting transportation options. Eventually, they reach the outskirts of Chicago. The monsters are far behind them, somewhere in the distant, but they are reluctant to go into the city, because what they find there is far, far worse. Let’s just the Windy City has had far better days, as in even the great Chicago fire of 1871 was far better than what has happened now.
This story is good, but it really helps if you are familiar with the B.P.R.D. world and plot lines in order to really put it all together, especially the Hell on Earth series. Overall, though, it is worth reading, but I do recommend you pick up Part One to save you some confusion.
