‘Quantum and Woody #6:’ Advance Comic Book Review

For those of you unfamiliar with James Asmus (Gambit, Thief of Thieves) and Valiant Entertainment’s Quantum and Woody, let me quickly catch you up. Eric (a.k.a. Quantum) and Woody Henderson are adoptive brothers, who have grown estranged over the years, until the death of their father brings them back together. It’s while investigating their father’s mysterious and untimely death that the brothers are accidentally given their superpowers, but there’s a catch. They’re bound by their metal wristbands, which they have to KLANG together every 24 hours or else every atom in their body will tear apart. Oh, and they have a goat.

Woody, the self-absorbed troublemaker of the duo, wants to make bank off his new powers, while Eric, the responsible one, wants to lay low and stay out of the spotlight . . . that is until his boss at Magnum Security, America’s largest private paramilitary contractor, asks him to put his powers to good use and be Magnum Security’s own private superhero for hire. In short, a bunch of whack-job separatists in Montana started a militia, and the government wants them taken care of. That’s where Quantum steps in. While Quantum is off on his one-man suicide mission to the separatists’ base, Woody discovers there’s more to this mission than they’re being told.

Quantum & Woody #6 gives you everything you’ve come to expect from the series, and then some. This is one of the best series on the shelves and is cleverly and hilariously written by James Asmus. Given Asmus’ comedy and performance background, it’s no wonder it’s so funny. Each issue makes you chortle, guffaw, and giggle even more than the last. This issue even introduced me to a new turn of phrase that I will most likely use ‘till I croak. I read this late at night, and the last panel of the issue made me wake up my family from laughing so hard. While Quantum & Woody can be brash, unforgiving, and outlandish with its humor, it’s also got quite a bit of emotion to it, because, at the end of the day, it’s about a couple of brothers reconnecting after many years. Each brother finds out something they didn’t know about the other, giving them more of an understanding of each other and why they act the way they do. Seriously, you need to add Quantum & Woody to your pull list. If you don’t, you’ll anger the goat, and trust me, you won’t like the goat when he’s angry.

Quantum & Woody #6 will be available at your local comic book shop on December 4th!

Overall:  9/10
