Man vs. Rock: Volume 3 picks up where the last volume left off, detailing the next step in the global war on rocks. After our attackers make the first move, the President of the United States of America and the U.S. military leap into action with a counter assault. While it appears, at first, that man has bested rock with America’s military might, it is only a matter of time before the rocks launch a vicious strike against their enemies. Lives are lost, hard choices are made, and one of our heroes may even be revealed as a rock-loving traitor before the blood bath is over! Detroy and Bieber’s script is fun, clever, and hysterical, as usual, but there are several witty surprises in Volume 3 that make it the stand-out issue of the series so far. I can’t wait to see what twisted hilarity Detroy and Bieber have in store for us as they become even more confident in the material. While the tone and humor of Man vs. Rock is definitely not for everyone (Detroy and Bieber recommend that, “If you find offensive things to be offensive, this book is not for you.”), if you enjoy the average R-rated comedy flick or like the sound of Dr. Strangelove mashed with Team America, then Man vs. Rock is the indie comic book that might just save your very life.
I must add a mention of Jared Lamp’s excellent artwork in this issue. Lamp’s talented work sells Detroy and Bieber’s jokes skillfully, while adding the uber-epic, Michael Bay-esque action and energy that a disaster movie parody like Man vs. Rock absolutely needs to be successful. Lamp continues to be the perfect third leg in the the Man vs. Rock tripod. Let’s hope this band is not splitting up anytime soon. (Don’t even think about it, Yoko!)
FINAL VERDICT: Your friendly neighborhood Comic Book Slayer fully endorses Man vs. Rock: Volume 3 as a book you MUST get your hands on (just be sure to get Volume 1 and Volume 2 first)! If you’ve got a good sense of humor (and a slightly dirty mind), then your ticket is already punched for the ride that is Man vs. Rock!
I’ve said it before and I will say it again, my fellow comic book sniffers . . . if you don’t support indie comics, the rocks win.
