Penguins vs. Possums #4 continues the epic war saga between the two battling species and adds several new chunks of info revealing many twists about characters on both sides of the conflict. This is also the issue where @#$% goes down. This is no longer just penguins vs. possums, but penguins vs. penguins, possums vs. possums, and soon . . . penguins vs. possums vs. people! (Trust me, we have no advantage.) Human characters have always been on the outskirts of the conflict, but Issue #4 also leaves us with a cliffhanger that hints at humankind’s potential discovery of the secret war and, let’s face it, our inevitable destruction at the paws or flippers of these bloodthirsty creatures.
One thing is absolutely certain: Kadlecik, Bring, and Calhoon Bring (and, therefore, Penguins vs Possums) are getting better and better with each passing issue. The story is tight, tense, and hilarious, featuring moments of extreme violence and uber-hilarity. As a Tarantino and Whedon fan, I enjoy my stories chock full of pop culture references, and Penguins vs. Possums #4 has no shortage, featuring clever nods from everything from Jurassic Park to The Lord of the Rings to the great bard, Willy Shakespeare himself! The artwork has also stepped up to a whole new level, becoming more impressive with each passing issue. While I’m sure that Kadlecik and Bring have officially logged enough time to qualify as the world’s experts on drawing spheniscidae (penguins) and phalangeriformes (possums), this book continues to be one of the greatest examples in the indie comic book world regarding the ability for grayscale to enhance the quality of the book. With the awesome and zany premise of Penguins vs. Possums, Bring and Kadlecik could easily make the story work with a crude, rough, and quicker style, but this creative team has ambitions beyond that and continuously delivers for their readers.
FINAL SCORE: 5 Incinerated Possum Soldiers out of 5

That’s all for now, comic book sniffers! All I can add in these final moments is that I see great things down the road (hopefully, not an ambush) for these critters.
