‘Man from Space’ Web Comic Review: T-Minus Five Minutes to Web Comic!

Man from Space webcomicMinor spoilers.

Man from Space, the wacky comic starring an a–hole from outer space and his snarky, foul-mouthed, intergalactic-traveling goldfish has . . . evolved. Much like the tranformation of Dr. David Bowman into a fetus-like star child during the finale of 2001: A Space Odyssey, UK cartoonist Marc Jackson has let his creation gestate for the appropriate amount of time (possibly in a living human host) and emerge in a sleek, new form: as a web comic!

For those who have yet to experience the sweet, hyper-speed ride that is Man from Space, I can best describe it as a cross between Harold and Kumar go to White Castle and Samurai Jack with a sci-fi twist. Jackson’s tale is an easy read with memorable and ridiculous characters that are sure to make you laugh out loud at least once.

While the first two issues of Man from Space are available for free on the Man from Space Facebook page, Jackson now plans to refine his work by rebooting it as a web comic which will be updated on a weekly basis. Along with adapting the story to a more “web comic”like format, Jackson has also added more detail and expressiveness to the characters than was present in the original version. While I found this addition to give the comic a more exciting and animated quality, I did find it to detract from the character of Michael the Goldfish. While the expressions Jackson added to Michael are vibrant and fun, they could not compete with the “imagined” versions I saw in my head reading the original version in which Michael is essentially expressionless. Has Jackson fallen prey to the sarlacc of hubris that swallowed dear Georgie Lucas and tainted his franchise with an unnecessary “special edition?” Uh . . . no. It’s not bad at all, in fact, and I’m sure many will prefer this new, spiffy version that they can follow week to week.
