The Kickstarter Report: ‘Calliope’ Film

At Fanboy Comics, many installments within our Kickstarter Report series focus on creators who are beginning to make a name for themselves.  Their talents are truly remarkable, but perhaps they are still hoping to bring their tremendous work to a larger audiences.  On other occasions, The Kickstarter Report highlights crowdfunding campaigns for more widely known creators who are taking on a project that is so monumental that it may require more finances than they have available.  Today’s installment focuses on the latter, where a group of all-star creators from the world of designer toys, stop-motion animation, and filmmaking are joining together to make a one-of-a-kind film that will leave viewers devilishly delighted this Halloween season!

Calliope d55

Earlier today, toy designers Kathie Olivas and Brandt Peters (Circus Posterus), stop-motion innovator and Annie Awards Special Achievement recipient Martin Meunier (Coraline), and filmmaker Jon Schnepp (The Death of “Superman Lives:” What Happened), launched a Kickstarter campaign for Calliope, a post-apocalyptic, fantasy adventure about an other-worldly girl who’s unaware that she’s actually Pestilence, one of the four horseman of the apocalypse.  Calliope is planned as an 8 to 10-minute stop-motion short film and is the most ambitious project yet from the husband-and-wife creative team of Olivas and Peters; it will be the first production from Circus Posterus Films, the couple’s New Mexico-based arts collective Circus Posterus.

“Calliope will use stop-motion production standards often reserved for feature film,” says Meunier. “There will be evocative sets, hand-built puppets, and breathtaking visual wizardry that bring the Calliope fantasy tale to life.”

The Calliope Kickstarter campaign will feature a number of creative rewards, including a comic book written by Olivas, Peters, and Schnepp with art by Olivas, Peters, and Dennis Cornetta.

Be sure to visit the Calliope Kickstarter page, and don’t forget to check out the backer rewards, which – in addition to the comic book – include a 4-figure mini toy set, hand-made sculptures, digital downloads of the film, and more!  You can also receive updates on the project by following Calliope on Facebook and Twitter.

The Kickstarter campaign will close on Tuesday, November 24, so be sure to donate soon!
