Geeks Care: How You Can Help Shark Savers for the 40th Anniversary of ‘Jaws’

When Fanboy Comics is not providing you with the latest in geek news and entertainment, the FBC staff hopes to offer our readers a myriad of opportunities to give back to the community. We love reading comics, watching movies, and playing video games, but we are never happier than when we are able to help others in need. With Geeks Care: How You Can Help, FBC will provide you a variety of causes that would greatly appreciate your time.

This week saw celebrated the 40th anniversary of Steven Spielberg's classic thriller, Jaws, and fans nationwide were treated to select screenings of the 1975 summer blockbuster in movie theatres across the US, courtesy of Fathom Events, Turner Classic Movies, and Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.  For that reason, this week's installment of Geeks Care: How You Can Help focuses on Shark Savers, an organization that recently merged with the non-profit WildAid to save sharks and mantas through building awareness, education, and action. While Jaws made the Great White Shark a household name, many remain unaware of the human dangers that threaten to further diminish their rapidly dwindling population.  With your help, Shark Savers' mission can reach greater audience and serve to greater impact the health and future of sharks!

Founded in 2007 by divers with a shared passion, Shark Savers now has more than 25,000 members from 99 nations that work to protect sharks and mantas.  Focusing on action and results, Shark Savers’ programs result in more protections for sharks and mantas, locally and globally. By leveraging broad professional experience and ocean expertise, Shark Savers brings this important issue to the public in many compelling forms, motivating people to stop consuming sharks and shark fin soup, working for the creation of shark sanctuaries and improved regulations, and empowering divers as advocates and citizen scientists for sharks.

Shark Savers continues to have a strong tie with Jaws to this day, as Jaws author Peter Benchley's wife Wendy continues to serve on their Board.

For those interested in making a donation or getting involved with Shark Savers' various educational and outreach programs, readers may visit the organization's official website.
