Geeks Care: How You Can Help Minky Ink and Children’s Institute

When Fanboy Comics is not providing you with the latest in geek news and entertainment, the FBC staff hopes to offer our readers a myriad of opportunities to give back to the community. We love reading comics, watching movies, and playing video games, but we are never happier than when we are able to help others in need. With Geeks Care: How You Can Help, FBC will provide you a variety of causes that would greatly appreciate your time.

In this week’s installment of Geeks Care: How You Can Help, Fanboy Comics would like to highlight the incredible efforts of independent comic book publisher Minky Ink, which publishes books written by children for children, working closely with non-profit organizations, including Children’s Institute.  Minky Ink not only publishes the children’s books, but the wonderful staff also educates inner-city students how to create the books and hires local artists to illustrate them.  By encouraging literacy and a love of learning in young readers – and also donating the profits of its work to charitable organizations, Minky Ink is setting a fantastic example to which we should all strive.  We at Fanboy Comics want to spread the word about their work to let you know how you can help.

Both Minky Ink and Children’s Institute, Inc. (CII) are based in Los Angeles, CA, where for far too many children, violence is a daily fact of life.  50,000 reports of child abuse/neglect are filed annually – more than 400 a day, 17 an hour.  Police respond to 43,000 reports of domestic violence, many involving children.  That’s why CII serves more than 24,000 children and their families in the city’s most challenged neighborhoods and trains more than 9,000 professionals in the realm of child development, mental health, and welfare.  CII provides healing, so traumatized children can recover and lead healthy lives, while working to shape the field of children’s services through innovative research, demonstration projects, and professionally accredited training programs.

By guiding students through the steps of creating their own books, Minky Ink is empowering students, showing them all of the creativity and ability that they hold, while also instilling a love of learning.  By further donating their proceeds to CII, Minky Ink is a powerful partner in the fight against children affected by violence.
